After planning this for six months, we’re FINALLY underway.
Yesterday, we packed the RV and set off from Nashville to our first stop in Atlanta, Georgia.
Anxiety level high, but stoke level higher.
We spent night one in Strack Inc’s yard near Fairburn, Georgia. We slept, but getting used to our new reality will take a few nights.
This morning, we waited out a big storm for a few hours before arriving at one of Strack’s tunneling projects around 9 AM.
They’re busy drilling through rock to create a 720’ long 66” diameter tunnel underneath seven railroad tracks and a highway for a new sewer line. Your poop doesn’t magically disappear!
Only one of us could go into the tunnel at a time, and thanks to Angel’s fearlessness, we captured footage of Strack’s crew working about 500’ into the tunnel. Neat.
We had a quick lunch, then returned to our RV home base to prepare for a busy evening with CW Matthews.
If you’ve ever driven down an Atlanta highway, odds are you’ve passed a CW Matthews crew or three. They work EVERYWHERE.
When determining which of their many paving projects to check out that evening, they said, “The mayor’s coming out to our job near downtown.” With that knowledge, we quickly decided that was our first target.
We arrived at 7 PM as the crew prepared for the night’s work. Once on the road at about 8:30, the mayor of Atlanta delivered donuts and shook the hands of everyone on the crew. It was quite a unique experience.
Post-photo op, the trucks began to arrive, and the crew was on the move, leaving behind a beautiful new layer of asphalt for the people of Atlanta to use for years to come.
Sewer tunnels and politics all on the same day. And this was only day ONE. The journey has just begun…
